Perge Stadion Restoration and Retrofitting

The stadium in the ancient city of Perge, Turkey, is one of the best-preserved stadiums from ancient times. It’s architectural style and stone work dates this edifice to the 2nd century A.D.

The huge rectangular building measuring 34 x 334 meters, was built on a substructure of seventy vaulted chambers. The tiers of seats which lie on top of these vaulted rooms, provided a seating capacity of 12,000. When gladiatorial and wild animal combat became popular in the mid-3rd century, the north end of the stadium was surrounded with a protective balustrade and turned into an arena.

The structure has quite significant stabilization, deformation and corrosion damages. Within the restoration project tendered by Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Prota engineers paid special attention to design of the stadium. The results of the analyses were discussed along with the design decisions of retrofitting the historical structure to obtain the best result.

Within the scope of the project, Prota provided in-situ measurements, restoration and retrofitting designs.

Entire services have been completed within two years and finalized in 2001.
