Earthquake Engineering
Since PROTA Engineering is the first earthquake
engineering company of Turkey, it has a broad
range of expertise in this field. It specializes
in the design of buildings and large structures,
seismic capacity assessment of structures,
repair and strengthening of damaged buildings
and software development for structural finite
element analysis, design and detailing.
PROTA has completed several projects funded
by the World Bank, European Investment Bank,
Eurepoean Commision, Europaid as well as seismic
risk reduction projects funded by several Turkish
ministries including Ministry of Public Works
and Settlement, Ministry of Education, Ministry
of Culture, Ministry of Health, Ministry of
Defence, Ministry of Interior, etc.
Besides, after 1992 Erzincan, 1995 Dinar,
1998 Adana / Ceyhan, 1999 Marmara, 2002 Afyon
and 2003 Bingöl earthquakes PROTA has
completed about twelve (12.0) million square
metres of
floor space in total of both earthquake risk
mitigation projects as structural performance
assessments, retrofit designs and technical
consultancy during constructions and post-earthquake
damage assessment, retrofitting and renovation
designs. PROTA’s specialised field inspectors
and two mobile field laboratories equipped
with damage
assessment equipment s are capable of accurately
identifying as-built structural conditions
and material properties to provide reliable
information for damage assessment and design
of retrofit measures.
PROTA Engineering has implemented many researches,
engineering services, construction supervision
works and technical consultancy services in
structural and earthquake engineering fields.

 LESSLOSS: Risk Mitigation for Earthquakes
and Landslides (Integrated Project) The LESSLOSS project
will have a permanent effect in reshaping the way
earthquake and landslide risk mitigation research
is carried out in Europe, creating bridges between
different fields of knowledge and the coordinated
remote use of facilities, resources and data, in
view of the technology transfer to the stakeholders
for effective risk reduction. A European research
area able to compete, in particular, with US and
Japanese centers in all fields related to earthquake
and landslide risk mitigation will result and may
progressively lead to the creation of permanent,
geographically distributed centers.

Consultancy Services for the Feasibility Studies
for Retrofitting of Selected Residential Buildings
in Istanbul
With BECA International - This project,
funded by a World Bank loan as part of the
Marmara Earthquake
Emergency Reconstruction Project, has undertaken
the seismic assessment of 369 apartment buildings
in the Municipality of Bakırköy, İstanbul.
The building materials have been sampled and
each building
measured so that it can be analysed to determine
its performance in a M 7.2 scenario event
some 12 km away. Retrofit solutions have been
developed,
designed and costed for each building, social
impact analyses, the cost-benefit ascertained,
and the
residents have been consulted as to the suitability/acceptability
of the retrofit scheme proposed. This is
an innovative project internationally which is
likely
to be replicated
by cities worldwide facing a similar risk
to İstanbul. Total closed area: 556,000 sqm.
